Pick n Pay, one of South Africa’s biggest retail chains, is looking for a full‑time Production Assistant to join the team at its Soweto, Gauteng store. This role is perfect for a hard‑working person who enjoys working with people, follows rules, and wants to help keep the store’s shelves stocked with fresh, safe meat products.

What the job is all about

The Production Assistant works mainly in the meat department. Every day you will help make, wrap, and label items such as sausages, mince and other ready‑to‑cook products. You will also check that prices are right, that labels show the correct information, and that the stock is turned over correctly so nothing goes bad or gets thrown away. Keeping the store clean, safe and at the right temperature is also a big part of the job.

Why this job could be a good fit

  • You live near the store – a short commute means you can arrive on time and stay flexible if the manager needs you to shift between stores.
  • You have a Matric certificate – the basic education level required for the role.
  • You can speak English – all instructions, safety signs and customer interactions are done in English.
  • You like working with meat – you will be trained to produce sausage, mince and other meat items safely and efficiently.
  • You enjoy teamwork – the role requires you to help colleagues, follow directions and keep the store running smoothly.

Main duties you will carry out

  • Make and pack products exactly as the recipe and quality guide say, staying within the daily budget.
  • Prepare a range of meat items – from sausages to minced beef – using the equipment provided.
  • Price items correctly for both weighed and loose‑sale products, following store procedures.
  • Check labels to be sure they match the product and price.
  • Do regular quality checks so every item meets the company’s standards.
  • Rotate stock – move the newest items to the front and pull out any damaged or expired goods.
  • Reduce waste by handling products carefully and keeping an eye on stock levels.
  • Monitor temperatures and keep the cold chain intact to protect food safety.
  • Keep the work area clean and follow all hygiene and safety rules, including floor‑backup duties when needed.
  • Use and clean equipment according to the set guidelines.
  • Talk to customers in a friendly way, answer their questions and give product advice.
  • Take orders and process them correctly, always following the service standards.
  • Promote products by highlighting specials or new items that might interest shoppers.
  • Communicate clearly with teammates, supervisors, suppliers and customers.
  • Support the whole store by working together with other departments to meet daily goals.
  • Take on extra tasks when asked and be ready to move to another store if the business needs you.

What you need to bring

  • Matric certificate – the minimum educational requirement.
  • Residence close to Soweto store – enables punctuality and flexibility.
  • Ability to produce meat products – you will be taught the exact steps, but a willingness to learn is essential.
  • English communication skills – both speaking and writing.
  • Attention to detail – a small mistake can affect product safety or price accuracy.
  • Following instructions – you must stick to the production standards and safety guidelines.
  • Good people skills – being polite and helpful to customers and coworkers.
  • Calm under pressure – the store can get busy, especially during peak hours.
  • Reliability – show up on time and finish tasks consistently.
  • Team spirit – help out wherever needed and share information openly.
  • Understanding of hygiene and safety – know why cleaning, stock rotation and temperature checks matter.
  • Willingness to do extra work – sometimes you may be asked to help in other areas or at another store.
  • Flexibility – the ability to adapt to schedule changes or new locations.
