Dis‑Chem Pharmacies Limited is looking for a Post‑Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant (PBQ) to join the team at the Benmore Gardens store in Sandton, Gauteng. This is a permanent role in the pharmacy department. The job is perfect for someone who is registered with the South African Pharmacy Council, loves helping people with their medicines, and can work well in a busy retail setting.


What you’ll be doing every day

  • Work under the watchful eye of a pharmacist whenever a task needs their sign‑off.
  • Help customers buy Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines, following all legal rules.
  • Prepare, mix, or repack medicines that are not sterile, using the right formulas and safety steps.
  • Pick, pack, and label prescriptions accurately, then give clear instructions on how to use them.
  • Answer questions at the dispensary, self‑medication counter, and front shop, always giving friendly, correct advice.
  • Enter prescription details into the pharmacy system, double‑check everything, and make sure a pharmacist signs it off.
  • Keep up with changes in medical‑scheme rules that affect how prescriptions are processed and claimed.
  • Help patients understand their medical‑aid costs and any other relevant information.
  • Follow up on script‑tracking reports and appointment reminders as asked by the Dispensary Manager.
  • Deal with any rejected or wrong prescriptions according to the set procedures.
  • Make sure medicines that need special authorisation (like chronic, HIV, or oncology drugs) are handled correctly.
  • Keep customer profiles up‑to‑date, merge duplicate records, and alert the central team when needed.
  • Spot low stock or out‑of‑stock items, report them, and assist with the twice‑yearly stocktake.
  • Take care of cash, stock, and other company assets, and keep the pharmacy tidy and organised.
  • Follow all Dis‑Chem policies, health‑and‑safety rules, and wear the approved uniform at all times.

What you need to have

  • Matric (Grade 12) is a must.
  • A Post‑Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification and registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
  • Willingness to work normal retail hours, including evenings and weekends when required.
  • Basic knowledge of retail or fast‑moving consumer goods (FMCG) operations is a plus.
  • Speaking a third language is an advantage but not required.
  • Experience with pharmacy software such as Unisolv, SAP, or E‑Scripting is helpful.
  • Strong communication skills – you should be able to talk clearly with customers from all walks of life.
  • Good problem‑solving ability; know when to ask a pharmacist for help.
  • Ability to work independently, stay focused, and deliver quality work without constant supervision.
  • Patience and calmness, especially when the pharmacy gets busy.
  • Good computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office.
  • Comfortable with numbers – you’ll be processing prescriptions, claims, and stock information.
  • Attention to detail – errors in medication can have serious consequences.
  • Physical fitness to stand for long periods and move stock when needed.
  • A valid driver’s licence, clear credit record, and clean criminal record.
  • Comfort working in a controlled‑temperature room, with security measures and limited space.
