What is the Purpose of the Role?

The Senior People Specialist plays a pivotal role in aligning business operations with HR functions, ensuring smooth labour relations, and fostering a positive employee experience. This role focuses on driving operational excellence, compliance, and employee development across the division.

You’ll act as a bridge between business leaders and employees, ensuring adherence to labour laws, policies, and collective agreements. The role also involves supporting employee engagement, wellness initiatives, and leadership development.

Key Job Objectives

1. Employee-Centric Delivery

  • Drive the operational delivery of People services and implement the divisional People Roadmap.
  • Act as a People advisor, offering support on People policies, processes, and escalations.
  • Collaborate with People teams to drive business growth through people-focused initiatives.
  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and talent management processes in partnership with People teams.
  • Provide data-driven insights on People trends, enabling better decision-making.
  • Support employee engagement and wellness initiatives to foster a positive work environment.

2. People Development

  • Support employees’ growth through mentorship, development programs, and training.
  • Manage performance reviews and support performance improvement initiatives.
  • Facilitate change management activities and prepare teams for business transitions.

3. Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with People governance structures, labour laws, and industry standards.
  • Develop risk mitigation plans in collaboration with the Divisional People Partner.
  • Manage labour relations, ensuring compliance with LRA, BCEA, EEA, and other relevant labour regulations.

4. Financial & Reporting

  • Track People-related budgets and ensure cost-effective operations.
  • Maintain HR data accuracy and support HR analytics, reporting, and data-driven decisions.

5. Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead People projects and change initiatives in alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaborate with People Partners and Business Leaders to create a future-fit, agile workforce.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Educational Requirements:

  • Degree in Human Resources or equivalent qualification

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years of HR generalist experience, covering the full HR employee lifecycle.
  • Experience in dealing with matters related to LRA, BCEA, and working within a unionised environment.
  • Desirable Experience: Experience in wholesale, FMCG, or retail industries is a plus.

Skills and Competencies

Labour Law Knowledge

  • In-depth understanding of Labour Relations Act (LRA), Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), and Employment Equity Act (EEA).
  • Familiarity with Skills Development Act and industry-specific regulations (e.g., Sectorial Determination 9 for the Wholesale and Retail Sector).

Dispute Resolution & Conflict Management

  • Expertise in mediation, arbitration, and navigating CCMA procedures.
  • Ability to negotiate settlements and facilitate dispute resolutions.

Communication Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication, report writing, and negotiation skills.
  • The ability to mediate disputes and maintain professional relationships.

HR Expertise

  • Strong knowledge of employee relations, grievance procedures, and workplace discipline.
  • Familiarity with collective bargaining agreements and how to manage unionised environments.

Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking

  • Ability to identify HR challenges and propose effective, long-term solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills, enabling data-driven decision-making.

Leadership & Management

  • Proven leadership skills, driving employee development and organizational change.
  • Ability to oversee teams, facilitate change, and manage transformation processes.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with HR software like SAP and Workforce Management Systems (WFM).
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
