The SAAFoST Foundation invites qualified applicants to apply for its 2027 Matric Bursary vacancies. The closing date for applications is 30 October 2026.

What the bursary is about

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is giving out bursaries to students who want to study Food Science and Technology after they finish high school. The money will help cover tuition fees for a full‑time degree or diploma. Bursaries are awarded based on good school results, fairness in hiring, and the applicant’s promise to succeed in the field.

Who can apply

  • School results: You need a Further Education & Training Certificate (General) or an equivalent qualification. You must have at least a 5 (60‑69 %) in both Mathematics and Physical Science. A good grade in Life Science is also helpful.
  • Citizenship: You must be a South African citizen and have lived in the country for at least three years before you apply.
  • Study plans: You must be ready to enrol full‑time for a BSc (or BSc Hons) – up to 4 years, BTech – up to 5 years, or Diploma – up to 4 years in Food Science and Technology at a recognized South African university or college.
  • Potential: Preference goes to students who have shown strong academic performance or clear potential for growth in the sector.

What you need to send

  1. Completed application form – available as a PDF or Word document.
  2. Passport‑size photo (head and shoulders).
  3. Certified copy of your ID (ID book or RSA passport).
  4. Certified copies of your Grade 11 and Grade 12 results showing the required marks in Mathematics and Physical Science.
  5. Personal statement (no longer than one A4 page) describing how studying Food Science and Technology will change your life and help the scientific community.
  6. Reference letter from a teacher, tutor, or mentor who has known you for at least three years and can speak about your character.

All documents should be attached to an email and sent to the SAAFoST Membership Development Officer at mdo@saafost.org.za. If you have questions, you can call 073 339 0870.

Bursary amount and payment

  • Up to R60 000 per year in tuition fees, as shown on the official fee statement from your institution.
  • The foundation pays the school directly in two parts. The second payment is only released after you achieve satisfactory results in the first semester.

Ongoing requirements

  • Membership: Register as a SAAFoST member within three months of starting your studies and stay active for the whole time you are enrolled.
  • Progress reports: Every six months you must send a short report and your exam results, highlighting any SAAFoST activities you have taken part in.
  • Academic standing: If you change courses, drop out, fail a year, or do not finish within the allowed time, the bursary may turn into a loan that you will have to repay with interest.

What happens if you miss a year

If you do not pass all subjects in a given year, the foundation may pause the bursary for the next year. Should you complete all pending subjects and meet the required standards the following year, the bursary will be restored and any previously unpaid tuition will be covered, but repeat courses will not be funded.
