What the Job Is About
You will join a team that helps keep building projects on budget. Your everyday tasks will let you turn what you learned in class into hands‑on experience. You’ll work side‑by‑side with senior staff who handle building operations and construction management, learning how to measure work, track money, and keep projects moving smoothly.
Main Tasks

- Support purchasing and manage contract paperwork.
- Prepare simple financial reports for each project.
- Team up with site crews to follow progress and note any cost changes.
- Use Microsoft Excel for data checks, charts, and basic analysis.
- Answer questions from site staff about quantities or costs.
- Make sure all numbers and documents are correct before they are sent out.
What You’ll Learn
While on the job you will see how a real construction site works. You’ll discover how project costs are calculated, controlled, and reported. You’ll get a feel for contract documents, buying materials, and the way a building’s progress can affect the budget. The experience builds a solid base for a long career in quantity surveying.
Skills You Should Have
- Good at solving problems and looking closely at details.
- Strong Excel skills (formulas, tables, basic charts).
- Very careful with numbers and paperwork.
- Organized and able to keep track of many tasks.
- Comfortable working on your own and handling pressure.
- Clear communicator who gets along well with others.
- Ready to take initiative and suggest improvements.
Bonus points if you have a Code 08 driver’s licence, can speak another South African language, or are willing to travel to different sites.
Minimum Requirements
- A recently finished BTech or BSc in Quantity Surveying from CPUT, UCT or NMU.
- Real interest in the building and construction world.
- Strong academic results in surveying subjects.
- Good computer skills, especially in Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to work independently when needed.
Documents you must send:
- Updated CV.
- Certified copy of your ID.
- Certified academic transcript.

Work Setting
You’ll split your time between an office that runs the projects and construction sites where the building work actually happens. Expect a fast‑paced environment with tight deadlines. Accuracy, discipline, and teamwork are key to success.
Where This Can Take You
Starting as a graduate gives you a clear path to become a junior quantity surveyor, then a senior surveyor, and eventually move into project management roles. The knowledge you gain here is highly valued across the construction sector and opens doors to many future opportunities.
