What You’ll Be Doing Every Day
- Cleaning the DAF unit, feather press, sump pit and feather area so everything stays sanitary.
- Washing all equipment exactly as the company’s cleaning checklist demands.
- Reporting any broken or faulty machines to the shift controller right away.
- Helping check broken shackles and yokes on the airline chiller when the line starts up.
- Watching the machines while they run and calling out any failures the moment they happen.
- Changing plucker fingers during the scheduled weekend maintenance.
- Keeping valves, scrapers, screens and pumps in good working order.
- Preparing the sump pit room for production start‑up each day.
- Making sure the feather area is tidy and ready before the shift begins.
- Cleaning and setting up the water sieve unit for daily use.
- Following all health, safety and operating rules set by the company.
- Lending a hand to any production tasks the supervisors ask for.
These duties help the abattoir run smoothly, keep the product safe, and ensure every worker goes home healthy.
What You Need to Have
- Education: Grade 12 or an NQF Level 4 qualification (or equivalent).
- Basic know‑how: Some exposure to simple machine maintenance is a plus, but not required.
- Physical fitness: Ability to stand for long periods and work in a warm environment with feathers and blood.
- Flexibility: Willing to do overtime, shift work, weekends and public holidays when needed.
- Safety awareness: Know how to use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly.
