Grain Field Chickens, part of the VKB Group, is looking for a permanent General Worker for the DAF Unit at its Reitz Abattoir in the Free State. As a General Worker you will help the abattoir run smoothly by cleaning equipment, watching for problems, and lending a hand with routine upkeep.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Clean the work areas – this includes the DAF unit, feather press, sump pit and the feather collection zone.
- Wash all machinery according to the company’s cleaning guide.
- Report any broken or faulty gear to the shift controller right away.
- Help check broken shackles and yokes on the airline chiller during start‑ups.
- Watch the machines while they run and shout out any failures the moment they happen.
- Swap out plucker fingers during the scheduled weekend maintenance.
- Keep valves, scrapers, screens and pumps in good condition.
- Make sure the sump pit room stays clean and ready before production begins.
- Prepare the feather area so it’s spotless and set for the day’s work.
- Clean and ready the water‑sieve unit for daily use.
- Follow all health, safety and operating rules that the company has in place.
- Lend a hand to supervisors whenever extra help is needed on the production floor.
What You Need to Succeed
- Education: Minimum Grade 12 or NQF Level 4 (or equivalent).
- Basic knowledge of machinery – any experience with simple maintenance is a plus.
- Physical stamina: Ability to stand for long periods and work in a warm abattoir that can be dusty, feathery and occasionally messy with blood.
- Flexibility: Willing to work overtime, shift work, weekends and public holidays when the schedule calls for it.
- Understanding of production steps and the ability to follow written procedures.
- Health‑and‑safety awareness: Know how to use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly.
- Team spirit: Good at working with others and staying calm under pressure.
- Reliability: Show up on time, work hard and keep the workplace standards high.
