About the Job

The Gauteng Department of Health needs 60 new Staff Nurses (Grade 1) for Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH). This is a full‑time public‑sector role that pays R229 440 per year plus the normal service benefits that come with a government job.

You only have to be registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Staff Nurse. No extra work experience is required after you get your registration. If you have already worked at CHBAH, especially on the COVID‑19 units, you will be given extra points.

The hospital is a large teaching hospital, so you will be part of a big team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health‑care workers. You must be ready to move between different wards and to work night shifts when needed.


What You’ll Do Every Day

  • Give basic nursing care that matches the rules and standards for nurses.
  • Help create and follow simple care plans for each patient.
  • Make sure patients get safe and kind treatment.
  • Get patients ready for X‑rays, blood tests, scans and other diagnostic checks.
  • Prepare patients for surgery and stay with them during the operation as needed.
  • Talk clearly with patients, supervisors and teammates about care and any problems.
  • Work well with doctors, physiotherapists, dietitians and other specialists.
  • Help nursing managers keep the quality of care high.
  • Use the hospital’s supplies wisely so nothing is wasted.
  • Keep accurate and up‑to‑date patient records.
  • Follow all legal, ethical and hospital policies while you work.

  • Keep learning, stay professional and act with honesty.
  • Be willing to switch departments and work night shifts when the schedule calls for it.
