The City of Johannesburg invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for its Bursary Programme vacancies. The closing date for applications is Friday 30 October 2026.


About the Johannesburg Bursary Programme

The City of Johannesburg wants to help young people from the city get a university education. Each year the City will give 200 bursaries to South African students who live permanently in Johannesburg. The bursaries can be used for full‑time undergraduate studies in any of the following fields:

  • Accounting & Finance
  • Business Management
  • Computer Science & IT
  • Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, etc.)
  • Health Sciences
  • Law & Governance
  • Social Sciences & Development Studies

These are the most common areas, but the City will consider any accredited undergraduate programme that lasts at least one year.


Who Can Apply?

Requirement Details
Permanent resident of Johannesburg You must be able to show proof that you live in the city (water, electricity, or rates bill).
South African citizen A valid ID document is needed.
Academic merit Selection is based on your school grades – the better your results, the higher your chances.
Enrolled at an accredited South African university You must secure admission yourself; the bursary does not cover the admission process.
Undergraduate study only Post‑graduate courses (master’s, PhD, etc.) are not eligible.
Minimum one‑year qualification Short courses or certificates that are less than a year do not qualify.
Renewable each year You can keep the bursary if you maintain a good academic record.

What the Bursary Covers

  • Tuition and registration fees – up to R40 000 per academic year.
  • Approved textbooks and study material – only the books the university lists for your course.

All other personal costs, such as accommodation, transport, or meals, are the student’s responsibility.


Documents You Must Attach

  1. Latest academic transcript – show your most recent grades.
  2. South African ID copy – front and back.
  3. Proof of Johannesburg residency – a recent water, electricity, or rates bill in your name.
  4. Parent(s) proof of income or death certificate – if you do not have living parents, an affidavit explaining your situation is required.

Make sure every document is a clear, certified copy. Incomplete applications will not be considered.


Important Reminders

  • Only candidates who make the short‑list will be contacted.
  • If you do not hear back within six (6) weeks after the closing date, treat your application as unsuccessful.
