Constitution Hill Development Company invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for the Museum Retail Assistant vacancy. The closing date for applications is 24 May 2026.


About the Role

The Museum Retail Assistant works in the shop inside Constitution Hill Museum. While on duty, you will be the main point of contact for visitors, helping them find what they need and making sure the shop looks tidy and inviting. You will also handle inventory, enter data, and check sales numbers to decide what to order again. The job includes evenings, weekends and special events that happen outside normal museum hours. The shop supports the museum’s learning programs and helps raise money for its mission.


What You’ll Do

1. Customer Service

  • Greet every visitor with a friendly smile.
  • Answer questions about the museum, the shop’s products and any promotions.
  • Help shoppers locate items and suggest alternatives when needed.
  • Deal with complaints calmly and professionally.
  • Keep an eye on the shop floor to prevent theft and gather feedback.
  • Process cash, card and online payments using the POS system.
  • Pack and ship orders for web sales or mail‑order customers.

2. Day‑to‑Day Operations

  • Open and close the shop, including checking the cash register.
  • Follow opening and closing checklists to keep everything in order.
  • Work with the Visitor Experience team on events and special projects.
  • Fulfil online orders quickly and accurately.

3. Visual and Store Standards

  • Arrange displays so they look attractive and easy to browse.
  • Restock shelves whenever items run low.
  • Keep the counter, storage area and shop floor clean (dust shelves, empty bins, tidy up at the end of each day).
  • Make sure price tags are correct and up‑to‑date.

4. Website & Stock Management

  • Update the online shop with current stock levels, new photos and product details.
  • Receive deliveries, count items, label them and put them in the right place.
  • Enter stock data into the inventory system and run regular stock checks.
  • Spot low‑stock items early and trigger re‑orders.

5. Security & Safety

  • Stay alert to any suspicious activity and report risks to the manager.
  • Follow all health‑and‑safety rules while moving heavy boxes or cleaning.

6. Supporting Museum Goals

  • Help the shop meet its sales targets.
  • Provide feedback from visitors to improve the retail experience.
  • Promote sustainable choices such as eco‑friendly packaging and products.
  • Ensure the shop welcomes people from all backgrounds.

Who We’re Looking For

Basic requirements

  • National Senior Certificate or an NQF Level 4 qualification.
  • At least 1 year of retail experience.

Nice‑to‑have

  • NQF Level 5 in Retail Management.
  • 2 years of experience in a museum or similar cultural setting.

Key skills

  • Strong focus on visitors and excellent customer‑service attitude.
  • Good teamwork and clear communication.
  • Attention to detail and a positive outlook.
  • Ability to learn quickly, solve problems and spot new ideas.
  • Punctual, reliable and able to manage time well.
  • Comfortable using computers, POS systems and online retail platforms.
  • Able to lift and move large deliveries safely.
