About the job
The General Assistant works in the Building Department yard at Brights Hardware, Blackheath, Western Cape. This is a full‑time, permanent role. You will help keep the yard running smoothly, load trucks, handle stock and give customers the help they need. The job is outdoors and fast‑paced, so you must be fit, reliable and ready to work in any weather.
What you will do every day
- Load customer vehicles, delivery trucks and transfer trucks quickly and safely.
- Count, stack and arrange all building materials so the yard stays tidy.
- Pull items from the shelf and get them ready for transfer to other stores.
- Tell a supervisor right away if any stock is missing or damaged.
- Keep the yard clean and free of hazards.
- Answer customer questions, suggest the right product and provide friendly service.
- Bag and move materials such as sand, gravel or stones when needed.
- Join regular stock‑takes and inventory checks to make sure numbers match.
- Follow all safety rules and company policies at all times.
What you need to bring
- A Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification.
- At least 1 year of experience in a similar yard or retail role (preferred but not mandatory).
- Good people skills – you should enjoy helping customers.
- Ability to count and manage stock without mistakes.
- Strong English or local‑language communication skills.
- Physical strength to lift heavy bags and work with manual tools.
- Ability to stay calm and work efficiently when the yard is busy.
- A team‑player attitude and a solid work ethic.
- Reliable, disciplined and able to show up for each shift.
- Willingness to work outdoors in sunshine, rain, wind or cold.
- Basic knowledge of hardware or building‑materials supplies is a plus.
