SANParks Invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for its 24‑Month Conservation Internship Vacancies. The closing date for applications is 22 April 2026.
What the internship is all about
South African National Parks (SANParks) is looking for young South Africans who have just finished a diploma and are currently out of work. The programme lasts two years and gives you a real‑world taste of how a top conservation organisation operates. Every month you will receive a stipend of R6 335.69 while you learn on the job.
The goal is simple: turn what you studied in college into hands‑on skills that matter for protecting South Africa’s wildlife, landscapes and natural resources.
Who should apply
To be considered you must meet all of the points below:
- South African citizen
- Aged 18 to 35 years old
- Holds a National Diploma (NQF Level 6) from a recognised college or university
- Currently unemployed
- Has not taken part in any other internship or placement scheme
If any of these points don’t apply to you, you won’t be eligible.
How the internship works
- Length: Fixed‑term, 24 months
- Placement: You will be assigned to a SANParks department that matches the organisation’s needs and your study background.
- Supervision: A mentor will guide you and give you regular feedback.
- Training: Structured learning sessions are built into the programme.
You will split your time between office tasks and field work, depending on where you are placed.
What you will learn
During the two years you will touch on several key areas of conservation work:
- Environmental & conservation management – how parks are run and protected.
- Administrative support – dealing with paperwork, data entry and communication.
- Research & data collection – helping scientists gather information on wildlife and habitats.
- Visitor services – learning how to manage tourists and ensure a safe park experience.
- Field‑work assistance – joining teams that patrol, monitor, and restore natural areas.
- Organisational processes – understanding how a large public body makes decisions.
These experiences give you a solid toolbox for any future job in environmental science, wildlife management or related fields.
Things you need to know
- The internship does not guarantee a permanent job after it ends.
- If your placement is far from home, you must arrange your own housing and transport.
- Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted – make sure all required documents are attached.
- All paperwork must be clear, certified and up‑to‑date.
Documents you must submit
To be considered, send the following items:
- A recent Curriculum Vitae (CV) highlighting your education and any volunteer work.
- Certified copy of your South African ID.
- Certified copy of your Matric (Grade 12) certificate.
- Certified copies of your diploma and any academic transcripts.
All files should be legible and properly certified.
Skills and personal qualities the programme looks for
Even if you have no prior work experience, showing the right attitude helps a lot. Look for these traits in yourself:
- Eager to learn new things.
- Clear communication – both speaking and writing.
- Ability to work in a team and respect different viewpoints.
- Comfortable in outdoor settings as well as office environments.
- Genuine interest in conservation and protecting the environment.
- Discipline and responsibility – you can be trusted to follow instructions.
Where you’ll be working
You could be posted in any of SANParks’ facilities across the country – from bustling park headquarters to remote wildlife reserves. Expect a mix of desk work (report writing, data entry) and hands‑on field activities (surveys, patrols). The atmosphere is professional, safety‑focused and driven by the goal of preserving natural heritage.
How this internship can boost your career
- Real‑world experience that employers in government, NGOs and research institutes value.
- Networking with seasoned park rangers, scientists and administrators.
- Development of transferable skills such as project management, data handling and stakeholder engagement.
- A solid resume entry that shows you can thrive in challenging, mission‑driven environments.
Many past interns have gone on to secure jobs in park management, environmental consulting, wildlife research and community‑based conservation projects.
