What the job is about
The Auxiliary Services Officer will help with research on crops and livestock at GADI’s farm in Middelburg, Eastern Cape. This is a government‑run position that pays R228 321 per year (Level 05). The role is perfect for people who like to work outdoors, are fit, and want to learn about farming. No previous experience is needed – a Grade 10 pass and a willingness to learn are enough.
Main things you will do
- Collect and handle samples – pick, clean, dry and pack plant or animal samples for the scientists.
- Measure and record data – write down weight, size, quality and moisture levels accurately.
- Take care of equipment – set up, check and keep research tools in good condition.
- Work in the field – plant seeds, prepare soil, water crops and use sprayers for pesticides.
- Harvest and store produce – pick crops, grade them, weigh them, pack them and put them in storage.
- Look after livestock – feed animals, give them water, check their health and help with vaccinations, dipping, calving and lambing.
- Keep the site clean – wash down labs, clean tools and manage farm waste safely.
- Support safety – help with fire‑prevention measures and general farm safety rules.
- Assist students and lecturers – help with practical farming lessons and drive students to field sites when needed.
- Do paperwork – fill in daily logs, registers and basic admin tasks.
