Transnet Invites Suitably Qualified Applicants to Apply for the Trainee Controller Learnership. The closing date for applications is Tuesday 6 October 2026.

What the Job Is About

Transnet needs people who can help move petrol and other liquids safely through its huge network of pipelines. As a trainee controller you will learn to use special machines that keep the flow steady, protect the environment, and make sure the job gets done on time. You’ll work with a team to meet the needs of both the company and the customers who rely on the product.

Main Tasks You’ll Learn

During the training you will pick up a set of everyday duties that keep the pipeline running smoothly. Below is a plain‑English look at what you’ll be doing:

  • Watch for Risks and Pollution

    • Tell the right people if there is a danger at the depot.
    • Write short reports about any risk you see.
    • Follow company rules and government laws about safety gear, permits, and work limits.
    • Keep an eye on storage tanks, spot leaks, and clean up any spills.
    • Deal with mixed liquids (called “transmixtures” or “intermixtures”).
  • Share and Check Information

    • Use Transnet’s computer system to control the pipeline equipment.
    • Pull out data, check it for accuracy, and put it in the right order.
    • Plan how to mix, load, or move the liquids.
    • Carry out small repairs, like testing, greasing, or fixing parts.
    • Run both scheduled and unexpected maintenance jobs.
  • Launch “Pigs” and “Spheres”

    • These are tools that clean or inspect the pipe.
    • Follow the exact steps to start them, making sure the pipe is isolated and drained first.
    • Track the cleaning process using the software.
  • Measure the Product

    • Use the meter to see how much product is moving.
    • Record the numbers in the system.
    • Shut down the flow if something looks wrong, then fix the issue.
  • Test Product Quality

    • Run simple quality checks with the company’s test kits.
    • Write down the results and tell the team if anything needs attention.

Who Can Apply

  • Finished Grade 12 (or Standard 10) with Maths and Physical Science, or have an N3 Technical Engineering certificate in one of these areas: Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Metering Control, or Instrumentation.
  • Passed a basic skills test that looks at numbers, words, and problem‑solving.
  • Can speak and write English well enough for daily work.
  • Holds a valid driver’s licence (codes 08 to 10).

Personal Qualities We’re Looking For

  • Good at figuring out problems (analytical).
  • Keeps going even when tasks are tough (perseverance).
  • Gets along with others and communicates clearly.
  • Notices small details that others might miss.
  • Can stay calm and think clearly under pressure.
  • Comfortable working alone when needed.
  • Handles frustration without giving up.

Equality and Fair Chance

Transnet gives priority to applicants who belong to the groups listed in its Employment Equity Plan. This means the company is committed to fairness and diversity in its hiring.
