What is the Kasi SME Pitch Challenge?
The Kasi SME Pitch Challenge is a nationwide competition that helps small‑business owners from South Africa’s townships turn great ideas into real‑world success. This is the second edition of the national event, and it offers:
- Provincial cash prizes for winners in each of the nine provinces.
- A grand prize of R1 million for the team that takes the national title later in 2026.
The competition is part of the Kasi SME Summit, now in its fourth year, which focuses on giving small businesses the tools, contacts, and exposure they need to grow sustainably.
Who can join?
To be eligible, a business must meet all of the following conditions:
- Turnover – Annual revenue must be under R50 million.
- Ownership – At least 51 % of the company must be owned by South African Black individuals.
- Location – The business must operate primarily in a South African township market.
- BBBEE – A current BBBEE certificate or a sworn affidavit confirming compliance is required.
- Registration – The company must be officially registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC).
- Tax compliance – A valid tax clearance certificate must be on file.

Why this competition matters
- Funding boost – Winning teams receive cash that can be used for inventory, marketing, tech upgrades, or hiring staff.
- Mentorship – All participants gain access to mentorship from seasoned entrepreneurs and Standard Bank executives.
- Market exposure – The summit brings together media, investors, and potential customers, giving your brand a national platform.
- Network growth – Connect with other township entrepreneurs, share best practices, and form partnerships that last beyond the competition.
Tips for a strong application
- Tell a story – Explain the origins of your business, the challenge you face, and how the prize will change your trajectory.
- Show impact – Highlight how many jobs you’ve created or how you improve lives in your community.
- Be clear and concise – Use simple language; avoid jargon that could confuse the judges.
- Proofread – Double‑check that all numbers, dates, and documents are correct before you hit submit.
