The Department of Transport, together with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), is looking for unemployed seafarers who want to learn on the job. This is a 24‑month Work Integrated Learning (WIL) programme that focuses on the Small Vessel Regime.
What the programme is about
- Length: 24 months (fixed‑term contract)
- Goal: Give participants real‑world experience while they study maritime safety and vessel inspection.
What you will do
If you are selected, you will help with a range of tasks that keep South Africa’s waters safe. Your daily duties could include:
- Assisting in the inspection and surveying of small boats.
- Joining scheduled training sessions and skill‑building workshops.
- Supporting checks that make sure vessels follow safety rules.
- Helping with community outreach to raise awareness about maritime safety.
- Writing simple reports on inspections and compliance checks.
- Carrying out operational duties while being guided by an experienced mentor or surveyor.
Where you might work
Successful candidates will be placed at one of the following coastal hubs:
- Richards Bay
- Durban
- East London
- Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
- Mossel Bay
Money you will earn
While you train, you will receive a monthly stipend of R10 000 for the whole 24‑month period.
