The main aim is to produce top‑quality television news that follows SABC’s public‑service goals. You will write, edit, and shape news scripts so they fit the channel’s style and timing.


What You’ll Do Every Day

  • Write and edit scripts: Turn raw reports and video clips into short, smooth scripts that match the house style.
  • Check facts: Verify every detail from different news sources to make sure the story is true and reliable.
  • Trim copy: Keep text brief and powerful, whether it comes from field reporters or wire services.
  • Voice‑over reports: Record clear and engaging narrations for news items.
  • Pick stories for TV: Spot the most news‑worthy items for the bulletin.
  • Follow breaking news: Work with reporters and scan news wires for fresh angles and updates.
  • Advise the Bulletin Editor: Suggest new story ideas and developments.
  • Fit stories into the allotted time: Adjust length so each piece fits the bulletin’s schedule.
  • Review video tapes: Check sound levels, timing, and visuals before they go on air.
  • Fix errors: Correct any language or factual mistakes in scripts.
  • Attend briefings: Join pre‑ and post‑bulletin meetings with the editorial team.
  • Stick to standards: Follow SABC’s editorial policies, BCCSA guidelines, press codes, and all other relevant regulations.
  • Brainstorm with the team: Share ideas, angles, and sources during regular creative sessions.
  • Coordinate with senior editors: Get technical and editorial support when needed.

What You Need to Bring

  • Education: National Diploma or NQF Level 6 in Journalism, Media Studies, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 4 years of proven work in writing and producing news bulletins.
  • Regulation knowledge: Good grasp of broadcasting laws and regulations.
  • Current affairs awareness: Strong sense of today’s social, economic, and political trends.
  • Computer skills: Comfortable using standard office and media‑production software.
  • People skills: Able to interact politely with reporters, editors, and other stakeholders.
  • Multi‑media know‑how: Understanding of how TV, online, and social platforms work together.
  • Language command: Excellent written and spoken English to make content clear and impactful.
  • Production knowledge: Familiarity with audio‑visual news production processes and systems.
  • Journalistic instincts: Strong editorial judgment and a keen eye for news value.
