Why the Gert‑Johan Coetzee Bursary is a great chance

For anyone who dreams of turning a love for fashion into a career, this scholarship offers a complete package that covers tuition, tools, and real‑world experience. It is designed to help you focus on learning creative design without worrying about tuition fees.

What you will receive

  • Full three‑year Fashion Design tuition at NWSD – a value of about R200 000.
  • A brand‑new laptop, provided by Gert‑Johan Coetzee Studios, ready for design software and research.
  • A Bernina sewing machine worth R14 000, perfect for creating professional‑grade garments.
  • Two paid internship placements each year at Gert‑Johan Coetzee Studios, giving you hands‑on experience with a leading fashion house.

Who should apply?

The bursary is open to South African residents who are passionate about fashion design, have completed Grade 12, and can show a basic portfolio or drawings that demonstrate creativity. Applicants must be ready to study full‑time at NWSD and commit to the full three‑year program.

Note: The bursary covers tuition, the laptop, and the sewing machine, but it does not include transport, accommodation, meals, or fabric for projects. You will need to arrange those expenses yourself.

Tips for a strong video submission

  • Choose a quiet, well‑lit space so your voice and ideas are clear.
  • Dress in a way that reflects your personal style – it shows you already think like a designer.
  • Practice your answer a few times before recording to keep it under the time limit.
  • Be genuine. The judges want to hear your true passion and unique viewpoint.
