Duties and Responsibilities

As a General Tour Guide, your daily tasks will include:

  1. Tour Preparation
    • Check the tour schedule to know your group.
    • Ensure the correct vehicle and driver are ready for the tour.
    • Make sure the guide equipment in the vehicle is working properly.
  2. Tour Management
    • Welcome tourists as they arrive at the harbour.
    • Assess tourist needs (like wheelchairs or prams) and provide support.
    • Introduce tourists to the tour structure, available amenities, and island rules.
    • Lead tours of Robben Island, providing key information on its history, nature, and geography.
    • Relate information about Robben Island’s history to global historical events.
    • Manage stop points during the tour and keep tourists engaged.
    • Conclude the tour and hand over tourists to prison guides for the next part of their visit.
  3. Information Research & Development
    • Research Robben Island’s history, politics, and environment.
    • Use online sources, videos, newspapers, and other materials for research.
    • Participate in meetings, discussions, and training sessions to improve tour content.
    • Share and discuss new information with peers and management to enhance tours.
    • Create new and engaging tour information to keep tours fresh and educational.
  4. General Administrative Tasks
    • Complete general administration work related to your role as a tour guide.

Experience and Skills Required

To be successful as a General Tour Guide at Robben Island Museum, you need to have the following qualifications and skills:

  • Tour Guide Certification: Must be a registered Tour Guide.
  • Education: Diploma/Degree in Tourism, History, Social Science, or a similar field.
