What the Casual Merchandiser Does

The role is part‑time and focuses on keeping the store tidy, products easy to find, and customers happy. You will be part of a team that makes sure shelves are full, items are shown the right way, and the shop looks inviting.

Everyday Tasks

  • Take new stock from the storeroom and put it on the right shelves quickly.
  • Check dates on products so nothing past its sell‑by date stays on the floor.
  • Rotate items using the “first‑in, first‑out” rule so older stock sells first.
  • Report low stock, broken items, or expired goods to the manager.
  • Help count stock during regular checks and keep records accurate.
  • Follow the store’s layout plan (planogram) so every product is in its proper place.
  • Flatten boxes after unpacking and move them to the recycling area.
  • Make sure shelf labels and prices are clear and match the system.
  • Tell the manager right away if any price looks wrong.
  • Stay up‑to‑date with new products that the store starts selling.
  • Build and tidy product displays following Dis‑Chem’s guidelines.
  • Keep the shop floor and back‑room clean and organized.
  • Load and unload boxes when needed, lifting safely.
  • Mark items without barcodes so they can be scanned later.
  • Help train new team members on basic tasks.
  • Greet shoppers, answer questions, and give friendly advice.
  • Check the out‑of‑stock list and follow up with customers who asked for missing items.
  • Wear the correct uniform and name badge at all times.
  • Handle merchandise gently to avoid damage.
  • Follow all Dis‑Chem policies, health‑and‑safety rules, and standard operating procedures.
  • Report any suspicious behaviour by staff or customers to the manager.
  • Support the store team with any other reasonable tasks that arise.

What You Need to Bring

  • Matric (Grade 12) certificate – this is a must.
  • At least six months of retail experience; more experience (up to a year) is an advantage.
  • Basic computer skills, especially Microsoft Office.
  • Good command of English – speaking and writing.
  • Presentable appearance and professional attitude.
  • Strong communication skills for dealing with customers, managers, and teammates.
  • Honesty, reliability, and a trustworthy nature.
  • Good time‑management – you can finish tasks on schedule.
  • Ability to work well in a busy store environment.
  • Bilingual ability (any additional language) is a plus.
  • Understanding of merchandising standards and the fast‑moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector is helpful.
  • Knowledge of product categories and the ability to read ZMORE reports for ordering and stocktaking is a benefit.
  • Attention to detail when handling stock, pricing, and displays.
  • Willingness to learn about new products and merchandising rules.
  • Physical fitness to lift and move heavy boxes safely.
  • Access to reliable transport or living close to the store.
  • South African citizenship.
  • Clear credit and criminal records.
  • Positive attitude focused on helping customers.

Why This Role Is a Good Step Forward

Working as a Casual Merchandiser gives you real‑world experience in retail. You’ll learn how to keep shelves stocked, how to present items attractively, and how to deal with customers in a friendly way. The job also teaches you how to manage stock levels, spot expired goods, and report problems quickly – skills that are valuable for any future retail or supply‑chain position.

In addition, Dis‑Chem uses this part‑time role to build a talent pool of people who might be considered for full‑time or higher‑level positions later on.
