What the job is about
The role is a contract position in the Dis Chem Palm Court store, Roodepoort, Gauteng. It is aimed at people who are just starting out and want to learn how a pharmacy works. You will help the pharmacists while you study to become a learner basic pharmacist assistant registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
How the learning works
- Fixed‑term placement: You stay in the role until you finish the training and become a registered learner assistant.
- Hands‑on training: All teaching happens on the shop floor, so you see real‑life pharmacy work every day.
- Path to a permanent job: After you qualify, Dis Chem may offer you a full‑time position.
What you will do every day
- Help sell Schedule 1 medicines (the ones that need a pharmacist’s sign‑off).
- Assist in mixing and preparing non‑sterile medicines.
- Follow the pharmacy’s step‑by‑step procedures for every task.
- Unpack new stock and put it on the shelves neatly.
- Keep the dispensing area and the counter tidy.
- Read prescriptions carefully and learn to check them for errors.
- Pick, pack, label, and double‑check each medication before it is given to a patient.
- Work with the pharmacist to confirm that every drug is correct.
- Watch stock dates and make sure nothing past its expiry stays on the shelf.
- Help follow up with patients and keep track of repeat prescriptions.
- Answer calls from the call centre and from patients who need help.
- Give customers basic health advice when asked.
- Support the pharmacy team with medicines for chronic diseases, HIV/AIDS, and cancer.
- Report any missing stock or mistakes to the dispensary manager.
- Organise incoming stock according to the pharmacy’s rules.
Staying safe and legal
You will be taught the strict rules set by the SAPC. This includes:
- How to handle prescriptions correctly.
- How to store and check medicines safely.
- How to spot possible drug interactions and correct dosages.
- The need for a registered pharmacist to approve every medication before it leaves the shop.
Skills you should have
- Good command of English and at least one other language.
- Ability to manage your time and meet deadlines.
- Calm when the shop gets busy.
- Sharp eye for detail.
- Clear speaking and listening skills.
- Friendly attitude toward customers.
- Problem‑solving mindset.
- Team player who enjoys working with others.
- Honest and trustworthy behavior.
- Basic computer knowledge and simple maths.

- Knowledge of systems such as Unisolv, SAP, or e‑prescribing.
- Previous work in a front‑shop or pharmacy environment.
Minimum qualifications
- Grade 12 (or Senior Certificate) completed.
- At least 50 % in Pure Mathematics.
- At least 50 % in Life Sciences or Physical Sciences.
- Pass the SAPC learner‑registration proficiency test.
- South African citizenship.
- Clear credit and criminal background checks.
Where you will work
The pharmacy is located in the busy Palm Court shopping centre, Roodepoort. The environment is fast‑paced and requires you to be accurate, focused, and to follow all safety procedures. You will interact daily with pharmacists, other pharmacy staff, and customers who rely on you for help with their medicines.
