City of Johannesburg Invites Qualified Candidates to Apply for the 2026 Student Internship Programme – Applications Close on Tuesday 21 July 2026

The City of Johannesburg’s Human Settlements Department is looking for energetic students to join its internship programme. The placement can last up to 18 months and is open only to residents of Johannesburg. If you are studying or have just finished a course related to building and community planning, this could be the perfect start to your career.


Who Can Apply?

  • Education: You must have finished Grade 12 (Matric) and hold one of the following qualifications:
    • A National Diploma in Built Environment (NQF 6) or
    • A Bachelor’s degree in Built Environment (NQF 7).
  • Proof of Study: A confirmation letter from your school or university is required.
  • Location: Only people who live in the City of Johannesburg will be considered.

What You’ll Be Doing

During the internship you will help the Human Settlements team turn plans into real‑world results. Your day‑to‑day tasks might include:

  • Supporting the delivery of housing projects in the city’s core areas and “Corridors of Freedom.”
  • Working with specialists to decide the best use for vacant land or existing buildings in a neighbourhood.
  • Assisting with project packaging, audits, and other paperwork as needed.

These activities give you hands‑on experience in how cities grow and how communities get better homes.
