Cape Herb & Spice Invites Suitably Qualified Applicants to Apply for Its Food Technologist Graduate Vacancies. The Closing Date for Applications Is Listed on the Posting.

If you have just finished a degree in food science, food technology or a related field, this 6‑month contract could be the perfect way to start a career in the spice industry. The role is based at Westlake Business Park in Tokai and will give you real‑world experience in New Product Development (NPD) within a busy spice‑manufacturing plant.

What You’ll Be Doing

You will join the NPD team and help the senior Food Technologist turn ideas into real spice products. Your daily tasks will include:

  • Helping with research – gather data and run simple experiments for new spice blends.
  • Recording information – keep clear notes on recipes, test results and any changes made.
  • Providing technical support – answer questions from the lab and production crew when problems arise.
  • Organising tastings – set up sessions where the team can try out new flavours and give feedback.
  • Checking quality – make sure every batch meets the company’s safety and quality standards.
  • Improving processes – suggest small changes that can make the lab work faster or more accurate.
  • Handling data – use Excel to track results and prepare short reports for the project manager.

The work is a blend of hands‑on lab work, paperwork and teamwork, giving you a full picture of how new food products are created from start to finish.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Education – a recent graduate (or early‑career professional) with a diploma or degree in Food Technology, Food Science, Consumer Science or a similar subject.
  • Organisational skills – you can keep track of several files and tasks without losing detail.
  • Pro‑active attitude – you like to take the first step and solve small problems before they grow.
  • Team spirit – you enjoy sharing ideas and listening to others in a group setting.
  • Computer basics – comfortable using Microsoft Office, especially Excel for data entry and simple analysis.

No full‑time work experience is needed – we welcome fresh graduates who want to learn on the job.

Skills That Will Help You Succeed

  • Analytical thinking – spotting patterns in test results and figuring out why something happened.
  • Accuracy – following detailed instructions and double‑checking numbers.
  • Time management – meeting deadlines even when multiple projects run at once.
  • Collaboration – communicating clearly with the lab crew, production staff and the NPD manager.
  • Comfort in a lab or factory – following safety rules and wearing the right protective gear.
  • Understanding of food safety – knowing why hygiene and quality checks matter in food production.

Where You’ll Work

The position is located in the Westlake Business Park, Tokai, inside a modern spice‑manufacturing facility. The environment is fast‑paced, with a strong focus on keeping recipes consistent and meeting strict safety rules. You’ll spend time in both the laboratory and the production floor, taking part in product trials, tasting sessions and technical meetings.

Because small changes can affect the taste and safety of a spice blend, paying close attention to detail is vital. The team works together to hit project milestones, especially during the launch phases of new products.

What You’ll Learn

  • Real‑world food manufacturing – see how large‑scale spice production differs from school labs.
  • Product development steps – from brainstorming a new flavour to testing, tweaking and finally scaling up.
  • Quality and safety procedures – learn the standards that keep food safe for consumers.
  • Data handling – become confident in using Excel to organise results and create simple reports.
  • Industry language – pick up the terms and practices used by food technologists and FMCG companies.

The experience you gain here can open doors to roles in quality assurance, product development, or broader food‑technology positions in the fast‑moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector.
