What you need to know

When you work as a Registry Clerk you will deal with a few important laws and rules that guide the Department. Knowing the basics of these will help you do the job well:

  • Departmental policies – the rules that run the Department.
  • Public Services Regulation Act – how public servants are managed.
  • Public Finance Management Act – the way money is handled in government.
  • Management Information Systems – the computer systems that store information.
  • National Archives and Records Services of South Africa Act (1996) – the law that tells how records must be kept.

You don’t have to be an expert, but being familiar with these topics will make you a stronger candidate.

Skills you should have

  • Good communication – you can talk and write clearly.
  • People skills – you get along well with co‑workers and visitors.
  • Problem solving – you can find solutions when something isn’t right.
  • Organising – you keep files and papers in order.
  • Basic computer use – you know how to work with Microsoft Office and similar programs.
  • Coordination – you can handle several tasks at once without getting confused.

What you will do every day

  1. Move papers around – receive and send documents between the Director‑General’s office, other parts of the Department, and outside groups such as committee members.
  2. File correctly – store every document following the official filing plan and the National Archives rules.
  3. Help the office run smoothly – give general admin support like answering phones, taking messages, and setting up meetings.
  4. Read the rules – study public service and Department policies so that everyone follows them the right way.

These duties keep the Department’s information flow fast and reliable.
