What the job is about

Dis‑Chem is opening a new store in Leratong City, Krugersdorp (Gauteng). They need a Post‑Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant (PBQ) to join the pharmacy team. The role is full‑time and permanent. If you are registered with the South African Pharmacy Council, like helping people with their medicines, and can thrive in a busy retail pharmacy, this job could be a great step forward.


Main duties

  • Sell medicines that need a prescription (Schedule 1‑5) and over‑the‑counter items.
  • Mix and prepare non‑sterile medicines following approved steps.
  • Re‑package medicines to meet legal and company rules.
  • Help order medicines and controlled substances when asked by an authorised staff member.
  • Read and check prescriptions under a pharmacist’s watch, then enter the details into the pharmacy computer system.
  • Pick, pack, label and arrange medication so the right patient gets the right dose.
  • Explain how to use each medicine clearly and answer any questions.
  • Stay current with medical‑aid rules and how to file claims.
  • Make sure a pharmacist checks every medicine before it leaves the dispensary.
  • Assist customers who need advice on self‑medication or other front‑shop queries.
  • Follow up with patients about prescription status and appointments.
  • Break down medical‑aid costs and benefits so patients understand what they pay.
  • Give health tips and accurate information about common conditions.
  • Process medical‑aid claims and fix any that get rejected.
  • Help obtain authorisations for chronic, HIV/AIDS and oncology medicines.
  • Keep customer records up‑to‑date and accurate.
  • Report any stock shortages, errors or inventory problems to the manager.
  • Receive and shelf stock using the “first‑expire‑first‑out” method.
  • Take part in the twice‑yearly stock‑take and keep tight control of cash and assets.

What you need to have

  • Matric (Grade 12) qualification.
  • Basic Pharmacist Assistant certificate.
  • Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
  • Experience using the Unisolv pharmacy system.
  • Good computer skills – Microsoft Office is a plus.
  • Strong maths ability and the ability to work with numbers.
  • Good command of English and at least one other language.
  • Willingness to work retail hours (including evenings and weekends).

Nice‑to‑have extra skills

  • Experience in retail or FMCG (fast‑moving consumer goods).
  • Ability to speak a third language.
  • Knowledge of SAP or E‑Scripting systems.
  • Familiarity with complementary medicines, drug information or family‑planning products.
