Dis‑Chem is looking for energetic, goal‑driven people to join the Alberton team at the Newmarket Lifestyle store. This is a fixed‑term role that gives you a chance to learn how a pharmacy works and to become a Basic Pharmacist Assistant. While you work, you will get hands‑on training and will move toward registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).


What the job is about

The Dispensary Support role is an entry‑level position in the pharmacy world. You will work in a structured environment where you can pick up practical skills and knowledge needed to become a qualified Basic Pharmacist Assistant. The program covers:

  • Basic pharmacy rules and safety
  • How medicines are handled and stored
  • Stock control and ordering
  • Customer service and health‑promotion basics
  • Working with qualified pharmacists on real‑life tasks

If you finish the training successfully and register as a learner basic assistant with SAPC, you will keep learning under the watchful eye of experienced pharmacists. After you qualify, a permanent job may be offered.


What you will do every day

  • Help sell Schedule‑1 medicines, always under a pharmacist’s supervision.
  • Assist in mixing and preparing non‑sterile medicines following approved recipes.
  • Unpack, shelf‑stock, and arrange pharmacy products neatly.
  • Keep the dispensary and over‑the‑counter (OTC) shelves clean and organized.
  • Learn to read prescriptions accurately and professionally.
  • Pick, pack, label, and prepare medication for patients.
  • Make sure a pharmacist checks every medicine before it is handed out.
  • Watch for expiry dates and keep stock in the right order.
  • Help with inventory checks and stock‑taking activities.
  • Call patients to confirm prescriptions or appointment details when needed.
  • Support the call centre by answering patient phone calls.
  • Give customers health‑tips and product information, always under supervision.
  • Assist with special authorisation processes for chronic medication, HIV/AIDS, and oncology drugs.
  • Report any stock shortages, mistakes, or inventory concerns to the manager.
  • Receive new stock and process it according to company guidelines.

What you need to have

  • Matric (Grade 12) or an equivalent senior certificate.
  • At least 50 % in Pure Mathematics.
  • At least 50 % average in Life Sciences and/or Physical Science.
  • Ability to pass the SAPC proficiency test for learner registration.
  • Good command of English and a second language (helpful but not mandatory).
  • Strong people‑skills and a friendly attitude toward customers.
  • Excellent eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Basic computer skills and comfort with numbers.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Good problem‑solving and conflict‑resolution abilities.
  • Professional behaviour, honesty, and integrity.
  • Team spirit and willingness to learn new things.
  • Reliable and accountable work ethic.

Extra points if you have

  • Experience in retail FMCG or pharmacy sales.
  • Previous work at Dis‑Chem with a solid performance record.
  • Knowledge of family‑planning products or complementary medicines.
  • Ability to speak an additional language.
  • Familiarity with Unisolv, SAP, or e‑Scripting pharmacy systems.
