Truworths is one of the biggest clothing retailers in South Africa. It sells a wide range of fashion for men, women and kids, and it has stores all over the country and even in some neighbouring countries. The company’s headquarters are in Cape Town, where many important jobs are made, especially in the distribution department.

What Does an Allocator Do?

An Allocator works inside the Distribution Department at the head office. Think of this role as a middle‑man between the big warehouse that holds all the clothes and the stores that sell them. The allocator’s main job is to decide, day to day, which pieces of clothing go to which stores. This helps every shop get the right items at the right time, so customers can find what they want and sales can stay high.

  • Why it matters: If the right clothes are in the right store, customers buy more, and the company makes more money. That’s why the allocator is a vital part of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and ship stock to stores based on the latest allocation plan.
  • Handle sample portfolios so managers can see new styles before they hit shelves.
  • Add duty codes to each piece of merchandise so it can be tracked easily.
  • Write weekly reports about what was shipped and how stores responded.
  • Talk to the team at the Distribution Centre to clear up any questions or problems.
  • Help out in other parts of the department when there’s extra work or a shortage of people.

These tasks may sound repetitive, but they are crucial because wrong distribution can lead to empty shelves, unhappy customers, and lost sales.

What You Need to Be Successful

Education and Skills

  • Matric certificate: The finished year of high school in South Africa.
  • Strong numbers and logic: You should be comfortable with calculations and spotting patterns.
  • Reading the system: Some knowledge of tools like MFP, RMS Viewer, Size curves, JDA, and BDM helps you jump right in.
  • Good admin skills: Keeping paperwork, spreadsheets, and files organized is part of the job.
  • Retail or logistics experience is a plus, but if you’re still learning, show you’re eager to pick up new tools.

Technical Competence

  • Big on numbers and data; an intermediate level of Excel is useful because many parts of the job involve sorting and recording information.

Behavioural Competence

  • Energetic and proactive: Bring enthusiasm and take initiative.
  • Great communicator: You’ll talk with colleagues inside and outside the company.
  • Work under pressure: When new deliveries come in fast or deadlines are tight, you still need to stay calm.
  • Attention to detail: A small mistake can cause big problems in shipping.
  • Team player: Working well with others makes the whole department run smoother.

These traits help you fit into Truworths’ fast-paced, customer‑focused culture.
